You find many personalities in the wine world, from superstar winemakers, to winemaking superstars, to the everyday family man. Bouncing from fine restaurants to rooftop cocktail bars with those great personalities can be exciting, but you cannot mistake the passion carried by an individual carrying on a great legacy. Such passion is impossible to miss in the wines produced by Baptiste Grangeon.

Baptiste is the vigneron and owner of Domaine de Cristia, a small yet well-respected estate winery in the heart of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. While his Vieilles Vignes Chateauneuf is an exquisite example of age-worthy Grenache, he produces several wines meant to be enjoyed immediately.  We tried his Provence Rose earlier this year, and you can still find it on our glass list at Just A Taste.  For June, I wanted to bring in two other portrayals of the same varietal made by his hands: Cotes du Rhone blanc and Vin de Pays Grenache

 

Domaine de Cristia Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Roussanne. To preserve the rich, clean fruit aromas and fresh character, the wine is fermented and aged completely in stainless steel.  

Domaine de Cristia Grenache comes from the Vin de Pays appelation surrounding Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  Baptiste ages the wine in unique concrete tanks so as not to overload the delicate fruit with oak yet allow the wine to soften. 

Created by Etienne Grangeon 70 years ago, the property originally comprised 2 hectares of Grenache. It was developed further by the driving force of his son Alain, who joined the domaine in 1963. Passionate about viticulture, he notably contributed to the expansion of the domaine and planted improved grape varieties such as Syrah and Mourvèdre and created the identity of Cristia, based on the knowledge and respect of his soils.

Then, in 1999, Baptiste and Dominique joined their father. Their priorities were to concentrate on selecting the best parcels in order to produce a wine of a great quality, with a good ageing potential, to commercialise in France as well as for export.
